Change
is scary.
Change
in the workplace is even scarier.
Change
in the workplace involving computers is about as scary as it can
get.
To
help cope with the Fear
of Change , we at Ulrich
Medical Concepts,
want to help you answer the following concerns:
I
am too Old / Young / Dumb / Slow / Impatient / etc. to ever learn
how to use a computer.
Well, no, not really. Just
because you think you are does not mean you are. And if you would
give the computer a chance, and much more importantly, give yourself
a chance, you might be surprised at how fast you learn.
Of course you'll make mistakes, but who doesn't? Millions of people
just like you have done this, and millions more will follow. You
can, and will, do it too.
I
am afraid that if I make a mistake, I will break the computer or
lose information.
Computers break every day.
So do cars, air conditioners, lawn mowers and refrigerators. The
Team
Chart Concept is user
friendly, forgiving, and robust. It is pretty hard for the operator
of a computer to "break" the computer and/or lose information unless
maybe you use a baseball bat as an input device. We at Ulrich
Medical Concepts are,
of course, on record as discouraging the use of baseball bats in
today's medical office environment.
Am
I being replaced by a computer?
No. Computers cannot think.
They cannot touch. They cannot heal. They cannot care. Computers
are machines that can do one thing very well: they can keep track
of enormous amounts of information. The Team
Chart Concept exploits
this ability of computers to manage information to help you, the
health care professional, do your job better. A computer is just
a tool, like a thermometer, a telephone, or a stethoscope, that
can help you to be a better thinker, a better healer, and a better
caregiver. Who would not want to find a better way? You should view
the coming of a computer system into your office, not as a scary
change, but as an opportunity to improve your life and the lives
of those you care for. Learning how to use a powerful computer system
like the Team Chart Concept
will make you MORE
valuable to your office, not less.
They've
tried to force computers on us before and it has failed miserably.
Of course we at Ulrich
Medical Concepts would
say that the Team Chart
Concept is different,
but you've heard that before. We might add that failure can result
from a lack of communication, and a failure to address the Very
Real Fears of ALL of the people
who have to use the new system. We are trying to address some of
those fears here. We do listen, and we do care, and we do think
we have a better way (and many of us have been employees in offices
that have made such a change).
I've
been practicing just fine, for a long time without computers, why
should I change now?
Because you do have the invaluable
wisdom and insight that only comes with experience. Because you
know you can be an even better healer with a tool that frees you
and your staff from the drudgery of paper charts. Because, in attempting
to learn, and tame, a system like the Team
Chart Concept , you will
earn the admiration and respect of your staff, your colleagues,
and most importantly, your patients. A computer system may not be
for you, but if you're smart enough to practice medicine, you're
easily smart enough to learn, and use, a tool that helps you to
practice medicine even better.
